Arsenal are now considering a move for a £100 million player who has also attracted an offer from Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Edu and Arteta Targeting a New Midfielder for Arsenal

With Mohamed Elneny’s departure from London Colney and the uncertainty surrounding midfielder Thomas Partey, it is believed that Arsenal may bring in another midfielder this summer.

Thomas Partey’s Potential Departure

Partey is garnering significant interest from Saudi Arabia, and with just 12 months left on his contract, Arsenal’s sporting director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta might permit the 31-year-old to leave north London.

Possible Replacements and Targets

Arsenal has been targeting Everton midfielder Amadou Onana among other options to replace or partner with star player Declan Rice. One notable target is Benfica starlet Joao Neves, who had a stellar campaign and is representing Portugal at Euro 2024.

Interest in Joao Neves

According to The Transfers Podcast, both Manchester United and Arsenal have shown interest in Neves. Manchester United has already made an offer, and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has also expressed their desire to sign him, aiming to pair him with fellow Portuguese midfielder Vitinha. However, extracting Neves from Benfica might be challenging due to his €120 million release clause, with reports suggesting it would take at least €100 million to sign him. PSG is reportedly hesitant to go that far, and Neves has recently rejected a new contract that would have doubled his salary.

Neves’ Impressive Record

The highly-rated 19-year-old midfielder made an impressive 55 appearances for Benfica in all competitions last season, scoring three goals and providing two assists. He was almost indispensable for Benfica boss Roger Schmidt, and his former trainer Luis Castro has praised him as a “complete” and “very intelligent” player capable of excelling in any league.

“[He can] play in any championship in the world. [He’s] a complete and very intelligent player,” said Castro (via Sport Witness).

“The Premier League is the best league in the world, and not only would he be able to adapt, but he would also play and shine. Knowing João, I think he is not worried about the next step but about the next game. He had good training at Benfica, but at family level, he also had a lot of support. He is very focused. I believe that if and when he takes the leap he will be prepared.”

Conclusion

Arsenal is gearing up for a busy transfer window, focusing on bolstering their midfield options. The potential acquisition of Joao Neves could be a significant coup, reflecting their ambition to strengthen the squad and compete at the highest level.
