‘I definitely believe they’re going to lift this cup’: Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has revealed who will win the Premier League this season, between Arsenal and Liverpool.
Manchester United veteran Wayne Rooney says Mikel Arteta’s current success at Arsenal owes ‘a lot’ to his time working with Pep Guardiola.
Mikel Arteta has made a significant influence at Arsenal, despite initially trying to transform the club into a reliable team.
After two consecutive eighth-place finishes in his first two seasons, as well as a surprising FA Cup victory, Arteta now has the Gunners vying for big prizes.
Despite falling short of the Premier League title last season, Arsenal is back in the mix this season and will continue in the Champions League.
And Wayne Rooney believes Arteta has benefited from working with one of the greats, Pep Guardiola.
Rooney makes additional claims regarding Arteta and Guardiola.
Of course, Arteta served as Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City for three and a half years before taking the Arsenal post in December 2019.
Rooney was asked if he would consider becoming an assistant manager after his most recent term at Birmingham City did not go as planned.
“It depends,” he informed Stick to Football. “Listen if Pep Guardiola approaches me and offers me the position of assistant!
“You see what Arteta is doing now and I strongly believe a lot of that is from learning from what Guardiola is doing.”
There is no doubt that Arteta has benefited from working with one of the best managers of all time.
However, the Arsenal manager is now competing with his former mentor and has taken his own approach in north London.
While there are similarities between the two, Arteta has left his mark on this Arsenal team, and their approach is vastly different from that of City.
Arteta will undoubtedly be eager to pull one over Guardiola this season, after City defeated Arsenal to the title last season.
The two sides are now tied on points, with Liverpool leading by a solitary point.
