Manchester United have officially decided against signing Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres this summer, bringing an end to weeks of speculation that linked the Swedish international with a high-profile move to Old Trafford.

Speaking during a press conference earlier today, United’s sporting director Dan Ashworth confirmed the decision. He praised Gyökeres’ impressive form in Portugal but explained that the club would be focusing on different attacking options for the upcoming season.

“Viktor is a player we’ve monitored closely — his numbers in Portugal speak for themselves. However, after careful evaluation, we’ve decided to move in a different direction regarding our attacking reinforcements this summer. We’re actively working on targets we believe will be a better fit for our squad profile and tactical objectives going forward,” Ashworth told reporters.

Gyökeres, 26, has enjoyed an outstanding campaign with Sporting CP, scoring 36 goals across all competitions. His performances sparked serious interest from several European clubs, including Chelsea, AC Milan, and Atlético Madrid. United were widely considered one of the frontrunners for his signature, particularly due to reports surrounding a £68 million release clause in his contract.

However, the Manchester United hierarchy, alongside manager Erik ten Hag, appear to have shifted their priorities, with the Dutchman reportedly seeking a striker with a different profile — potentially a more mobile and versatile forward to complement current number nine Rasmus Højlund.

When asked about United’s alternative plans in the market, Ashworth declined to name specific players but hinted that discussions are already at an advanced stage with other clubs.

“We’re in advanced discussions for other targets. The attacking department is an area we intend to strengthen, and our fans can expect updates very soon,” he added.

It is understood that United have been monitoring Lille’s Jonathan David, Brentford’s Ivan Toney, and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško, though no official bids have yet been submitted.

With Manchester United now out of the race, attention turns to what lies ahead for Gyökeres. Sporting CP remain firm in their stance that any club interested in the striker must activate his full release clause. Sporting manager Rúben Amorim reiterated this position earlier today, stating, “He’s a crucial part of our project, and we’re not negotiating below the value stated in his contract.”

As the transfer window progresses, clubs like Chelsea and Atlético Madrid are expected to assess their options regarding Gyökeres, who remains one of Europe’s most in-demand forwards.

The decision marks a clear statement of intent from Manchester United’s new recruitment team, as they continue reshaping the squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
