Aaron Ramsdale is poised to become Arsenal’s first major sale this summer following a reported agreement by Mikel Arteta to bring in a new goalkeeper. Reports from Spain suggest that Arsenal has outmaneuvered Real Madrid to secure the signing of Espanyol’s No. 1, Joan Garcia, with the official announcement and fee expected shortly.
The 23-year-old Garcia was instrumental in Espanyol’s promotion to La Liga last season, making 21 appearances. With David Raya also set to finalize his permanent move from Brentford for £27 million, Arteta’s plans for Ramsdale are becoming evident.
Previously, Garcia downplayed rumors of a move, expressing his contentment in Spain. “I have always felt the love of the fans,” he said after his team secured promotion with a playoff victory over Real Oviedo. “I’m very happy that people are with me. And for that part (a move), don’t worry, I’m very good here and above all I would ask you to be calm and encourage us.”
Despite being named in the Premier League team of the season in 2022/23 and earning a contract extension until 2026, England international Ramsdale began to be linked with clubs like Newcastle and Wolves after losing his starting spot to Raya. Initially, Arteta claimed that Raya and Ramsdale would share first-team duties. However, Ramsdale only made six Premier League appearances during the 2023/24 season, two of which were against Brentford when Raya was ineligible.
Arteta had initially been adamant about Ramsdale’s place in the squad, stating, “There is a big reality that Aaron will be here because he is our player and has a contract.” Despite these assurances, the latest developments indicate that Ramsdale’s departure is imminent as Arsenal reconfigures their goalkeeping lineup.
