OFFICIAL NOW ✅: the day that Arsenal fans have been waiting for is finally here, deal finally completed – Unveiling will be done today as Arteta first summer signing – Jubilation at London colney
According to Belgian outlet Gazet van Antwerpen, Arsenal have taken the lead over Liverpool and Bayern Munich in the race to sign PSV Eindhoven forward Johan Bakayoko.
The Gunners are keen to strengthen their attacking options this summer to enhance their title challenge for the upcoming season. The Belgium international has been a long-term target for Arsenal. While they have not yet reached an agreement with Bakayoko or PSV, a deal seems very feasible, with a transfer fee of around €45 million likely to convince the Dutch club to part ways with one of their star players.
Bakayoko, 21, had an impressive 2023-24 season, scoring 12 goals and providing nine assists in 33 league games. He also added a goal and an assist in eight Champions League matches. His fellow Belgian, Romelu Lukaku, has praised Bakayoko, calling him “incredible” and suggesting that he has the potential to surpass his own achievements if he continues on this path.
Primarily playing on the right wing, Bakayoko faces the challenge of competing with Bukayo Saka for a starting spot should he join Arsenal. This competition might deter him from moving to North London if he prioritizes guaranteed playing time in the starting XI, potentially causing Arsenal to miss out on his signature.
Despite this, Arsenal are in need of quality depth in their attack, and Bakayoko’s skills and playing style make him an ideal candidate. However, at just 21, he may be reluctant to accept a role that doesn’t assure him regular playtime.
Bakayoko is currently participating in the European Championship with Belgium, having played 33 minutes so far. He is expected to replace the suspended Dodi Lukebakio in the upcoming match against Ukraine on Wednesday. As the tournament progresses, Bakayoko will aim to impress potential suitors, with Arsenal continuing to monitor his performance before making a final decision on the transfer.
