According to The Athletic, Arsenal have identified Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams as a key target for the summer transfer window.

Williams had an outstanding 2023/24 season with Bilbao, standing out with 8 goals and 19 assists in 37 appearances. His impressive performance has continued at the ongoing European Championship, further catching Arsenal’s attention.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, a fellow Spaniard, is a big admirer of Williams. He sees the 21-year-old as one of the top options should Arsenal decide to bring in another winger.

Currently, Arsenal’s wide attacking options include Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli on the left, with Bukayo Saka firmly established on the right. Despite Saka’s consistent goal contributions, Arteta may seek additional quality to lessen Saka’s workload.

Williams could be an excellent addition in this regard. While he mainly played on the left for Bilbao last season, he previously excelled on the right wing in the 2022/23 season. His versatility, combined with his superb dribbling skills, pace, and defensive work rate, makes him a valuable asset.

The Athletic notes that Williams has a £46.5 million release clause in his contract, and Bilbao is unlikely to accept a lower offer. Given his youth and potential, this price could be a bargain in the current market.

However, it remains to be seen if Arsenal can convince Williams to join without the promise of regular starts.
