Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti sets sights on €90 million-rated Arsenal defender
During the 2023-24 season, Real Madrid realized that their central defense lacked sufficient depth. The team struggled with the absence of two key defenders for much of the season, highlighting the need for reinforcements. As a result, manager Carlo Ancelotti and his coaching staff are prioritizing the acquisition of a new center-back by June.
The situation has become more urgent with the likely departure of Nacho Fernandez, further depleting Real Madrid’s defensive options. The club is exploring various candidates to fill this crucial role, and one of the top prospects is Leny Yoro. However, recent reports from Mundo Deportivo indicate that Ancelotti is particularly interested in Arsenal’s William Saliba.
William Saliba, at 23 years old, is a vital part of Mikel Arteta’s squad at Arsenal. His combination of youth and experience makes him an attractive option for Real Madrid. Despite Ancelotti’s keen interest, acquiring Saliba poses significant challenges. He is under contract with Arsenal until 2027, with an estimated value of around €90 million. Arsenal is not inclined to sell him and is even considering extending his contract, which complicates Real Madrid’s pursuit.
In the meantime, Real Madrid is set to benefit from the return of Rafa Marin next month. Currently on loan at Deportivo Alaves, the 21-year-old has established himself as a regular starter. Marin has been impressive, contributing to seven clean sheets and averaging nearly ten defensive actions and 3.7 ball recoveries per game.
Marin’s role in Real Madrid’s future will largely depend on whether the club can secure a top-tier center-back this summer. Nevertheless, based on his current performance, Marin has shown that he is capable of stepping up to fill the existing gap in the team’s defense.
