Former Chelsea star is set to leave Barcelona on a free transfer this summer
After a span of two years with the revered Catalan club, Marcos Alonso is poised to bid farewell to Barcelona, marking the end of his tenure with a free transfer upon the culmination of the ongoing season.
Throughout the course of the current campaign, the 33-year-old has encountered a challenging journey beset by injuries, notably sidelining him from all La Liga fixtures since October due to a back ailment sustained in December.
Alonso, a seasoned Spanish international, initially made a significant impact in his inaugural season at Barcelona subsequent to his departure from Chelsea in 2022. During this period, he amassed 37 appearances across various competitions, contributing substantially to the club’s conquest of the La Liga title.
Originally entering into a one-year contract, Alonso extended his stay at the club in January of the preceding year, prolonging his commitment until the summer of 2024.
Nevertheless, according to the discerning insights of renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Alonso’s tenure at Camp Nou appears poised to draw to a close this summer due to the persistent setbacks caused by his injuries. In a bid to culminate his tenure at Barcelona on a resounding note, Alonso, having recuperated from his injury woes, made a cameo appearance off the bench during Barcelona’s 1-0 triumph over Las Palmas in La Liga on March 30.
The forthcoming challenge for Xavi’s formidable squad entails a quarterfinal clash in the prestigious Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain, scheduled to commence in Paris on April 10.
