PGMOL has explained the reason why Liverpool were not awarded a penalty against Manchester Cityblast night

The Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester City ended in controversy as Liverpool’s potential penalty in the dying seconds went unawarded, a decision now explained by PGMOL, the refereeing body.

In a crucial match in the title race, Liverpool had the chance to snatch victory against Pep Guardiola’s side, earning three crucial points in their pursuit of the championship.

However, the encounter at Anfield ultimately ended in a draw, with Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half penalty canceling out John Stones’ earlier goal. Despite dominating the second half and creating numerous scoring opportunities, Liverpool felt aggrieved at not being awarded another penalty in stoppage time when Jérémy Doku’s high boot made contact with Mac Allister’s chest, prompting a lengthy VAR review.

The decision to uphold the on-field referee’s call incensed Liverpool’s supporters, leading to a passionate challenge from manager Jürgen Klopp at full time. PGMOL cited VAR’s assessment that Doku had played the ball as justification for their conclusion, a statement corroborated by former referee Mike Dean, who suggested Doku was fortunate to escape punishment.

Dean emphasized the significance of the VAR’s decision, noting Doku’s initial contact with the ball but highlighting the subsequent follow-through that caught Mac Allister’s ribcage. Despite the contentious incident, the match showcased the skill of both teams in a fiercely competitive encounter.

While it appeared Doku had initially made contact with the ball, his challenge was deemed reckless, and many believed Liverpool had grounds for a penalty. Ultimately, the match ended in a draw, a result that seemed fair given Liverpool’s second-half dominance countered by Manchester City’s strong performance in the first half.
