“Nobody has done that ever since Paul Pogba left the Premier League. Not even Kelvin De Bruyen and Bruno Fernandes. But the young 18 years old boy broke the record effortlessly in one match. This shows how ionic his career will be”-Kobbie Mainoo becomes first Man Utd player since Paul Pogba to produce stunning record vs Luton
Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo demonstrated his talent with a standout performance in his team’s 2-1 victory over Luton on Sunday, following in the footsteps of Paul Pogba in the process.
Mainoo was one of the standout performers during a frantic match at Kenilworth Road.Rasmus Hojlund scored for United just 46 seconds into the game, making it his sixth consecutive appearance with a goal in all competitions.
The Danish midfielder added his goal seven minutes later, putting Erik ten Hag’s team on track for a fourth consecutive Premier League victory. However, Luton rallied back, and despite Carlton Morris’ goal in the 14th minute, United failed to keep control as Rob Edwards’ side applied unrelenting pressure.
Despite Luton’s attempts, including 22 shots on Andre Onana’s goal and 58 percent possession over 90 minutes, they were unable to score an equalizer, resulting in a critical victory for United. While Ten Hag’s team received criticism from supporters, Mainoo’s controlled performance stood out, putting him in the same league as Paul Pogba in one statistic.
The 18-year-old had six dribbles against Luton, one fewer than Pogba had in a game in April 2022, making them the two United players with the most dribbles in a single match since then.
According to WhoScored, Diogo Dalot was the closest United player to Mainoo’s dribbling total against Luton, with two, while Luton’s Ross Barkley had five.Mainoo’s outstanding performances at club level have fuelled speculation of a possible call-up to the England side for Euro 2024. He is also eligible to represent Ghana, having previously represented England at the youth level.
